Year 9 boys are Yorkshire rugby Champions, West Yorkshire basketball Champions, Wakefield football cup runners up and they have finished the season off in style by becoming Wakefield Division 1 football Champions!!
The King’s School vs St Wilfreds has been a great game over the last couple of years, with there being little to choose between the two sides in previous games played. However King’s managed to get the win when it counted!
King’s took an early blow when their left back Luke Devine was injured with a broken foot. Dominic Wrack and Lewis Healey scored goals but St Wilfs kept attacking especially down their left wing and managed to get two of their own which left the score 2-2 at full time! Extra time to come. Only 7 minutes each way to play and Wilfs got an early goal making it 3-2. In the second half of extra time King’s threw everything at Wilfs with wave after wave of attack from Hardwick, Ridge, Gilbert and Ben Bottomley. Still not managing to break the Wilfs defence and level the scores – with a minute remaining in extra time things looked ominous for the king’s lads. Then king’s got the break they needed – a free kick from 45 yard out. Up steps Milthorpe to smash in a knuckle ball free kick into the roof of the net to send the game to penalties!!!
Wilfs were up first and put there penalty away. Up steps Bailey Ridge to slot home the first penalty as cool as you like to settle the nerves and equalise. 2nd penalty goes to a nervous Ben Bottomley who slid a lovely penalty into the corner. Once again to equalise. Lewis Healey stepped up and slotted home his penalty into the top corner after another Wilfs goal, 3-3!!! The fourth penalty from Wilfs was placed too close to the captain Pat Boyes who pulled off a tremendous save. The fourth penalty fell to Hardwick who put the ball in the back of the net – advantage King’s! The Wilfs player then smashed their final penalty over the cross bar to seal the win for King’s meaning Dom Wrack didn’t even have to step up to the spot.
3rd – Dom Wrack – linked superbly well with Hardwick up front and scored a move goal.
2nd – Ben Bottomley – lead the team defensively and with his communication from CDM.
1st – Josh Milthorpe – for his 45 yard free kick to keep king’s hopes alive!
A great win to top off a very successful season. Well done year 9!!!
