The King’s school marked Remembrance this week with the year group assemblies. They were supported by many representatives from the Ackworth and Pontefract branch of the Royal British Legion.
This year, we focused on looking at war and its heroes through a range of poetry. Four talented performing arts students; Emma Nicholson, Molly Freeborn, Ella Hickling and Alex Wester delivered an emotive and powerful piece of spoken word poetry written by their teachers, Karey Marshall and Jordan Batters. The poem focused on the different perspectives of those at war.
The school has had many activities focusing on remembrance this year. Ten Year 9 and Year 10 students attended Pontefract memorial, for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, on 1st July 2016.
Former Assistant Head teacher, Sue Higgins organised and delivered the assemblies and she was joined by Max Bland, Joseph Bugg and Hannah Raddings from the Student Leadership team. All students conducted themselves in an appropriate and dignified manner and the assemblies were beautifully delivered.
